More about zorgtoeslag
Detailed explanations for every input, the maths behind them, and the underlying statute — hand-written, with sources cited.
How does the Zorgtoeslag calculator work?
The Buronia Zorgtoeslag calculator computes your monthly health-insurance allowance for 2026 in real time, based on five inputs: with or without a toeslagpartner, annual income, assets on 1 January, age, and Dutch health insurance. No sign-in, no tracking, no storage of personal data.
Every change updates the URL (e.g. ?household=single&annual_income=28000&assets=0) — copy it to share a specific scenario. Source for all thresholds: Belastingdienst — Dienst Toeslagen, 2026.
How is Zorgtoeslag 2026 calculated?
The Belastingdienst applies these parameters in 2026:
- Single maximum: €129/month
- With toeslagpartner maximum: €258/month
- Income ceiling single: €40,857/year
- Income ceiling with partner: €51,142/year (jointly)
- Asset cap single: €146,011
- Asset cap with partner: €184,633 (jointly)
Below the taper threshold (~€29,500 single, ~€36,000 couple) you receive the maximum. Between the taper threshold and the income ceiling the allowance falls linearly. Above the ceiling: no entitlement.
allowance = max × (1 − (income − taper_start) / (ceiling − taper_start))Example: single, annual income €35,000 → midpoint between taper start and ceiling → ~€69/month.
Who qualifies for Zorgtoeslag?
Conditions for Zorgtoeslag in 2026:
- You are 18 or older
- You hold a Dutch health-insurance policy (zorgverzekering)
- You have Dutch nationality or a valid residence permit
- Your verzamelinkomen stays below the ceiling (€40,857 single / €51,142 couple)
- Your assets on 1 January stay below €146,011 (single) or €184,633 (couple)
Toeslagpartner: married, registered partner, cohabiting with a shared child, or fiscal partner. Incomes and assets are combined for the test.
Students aged 18+ are entitled to Zorgtoeslag whether or not they are studying — health insurance has been mandatory since 2024 and the allowance compensates for that.

Frequently asked questions
Why is Zorgtoeslag lower in 2026 than 2025? The income ceilings have risen slightly, but the maxima have been cut a touch (from €131 to €129 single, from €261 to €258 couple) — net effect: a small reduction for most people.
Does my AOW pension count? Yes — AOW counts as income for the Zorgtoeslag test.
What if my income fluctuates? The Belastingdienst works with an estimate; the final assessment reconciles. Estimate slightly high rather than low — clawbacks are more painful than a top-up.
Can I receive Zorgtoeslag if I work in Germany but live in the Netherlands? Yes, provided you have Dutch health insurance. Cross-border workers have specific rules (S1/E106 forms) — consult the Belastingdienst.
